An autopsy was conducted Wednesday on the body of the man who was killed in a police-involved shooting Monday afternoon at a home off West Kawailani Street in Hilo.
The medical examiner determined that 25-year-old Kalyp Allen Rapoza of Hilo died from gunshot wounds to the head and body.
A necropsy conducted Tuesday determined that a pit bull killed in the same incident also died of gunshot wounds.
As is standard practice in any officer-involved shooting, the Hilo Criminal Investigations Section is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, and the Office of Professional Standards, the department’s internal affairs unit, is conducting an administrative investigation.
The officer who discharged his firearm has been with the Hawaii Police Department for three years. He was not injured. He has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigations take place.
